Nostalgia

Have you ever looked back to a few years and thought damn that dress looked good? Well that’s my thought exactly. There are certain outfits which create a significant memory like a wedding dress, graduation or any other special occasion. There’s a certain sentiment that we all hold dearly to us.  It’s called nostalgia. I have a collage of pictures that bring back memories of a significant time at a point in my life.

So look no further, I could not start the process without taking it all the way back…

1991

PhotoGrid_1517846825831

I was almost a year old in this photo, therefore I don’t remember shit about this. However this is one of the first dresses that my mother had dressed me in. There’s something very regal about this picture… I am the centre of attention of course!

1996

PhotoGrid_1517848303089

It’s really not about the dress, but all about the accessories! From the flower broach, to my love Disney characters (that was Pocahontas in which I had traded for another character), along with my half stud-half hoop earring style… everything was on point.  I lost one side of my earring so I decided to be creative and fill my earlobes with a stud. Plus I was no longer in kindergarden so I felt like a boss.

2014

Graduation is a big deal for a lot of reasons. For me, the program had taken a huge toll on my  stress level… post secondary school has a tendency to do this. It’s not only crunch time with exams, projects or anything on else within this time period in which honestly gave me anxiety… it was being unaware of where I was going in life. Taking Journalism taught me a few things, but the biggest gain from the program was of course the belief in my writing along with my resilience. So this was a day for celebration and this dress was giving mermaid vibes. Speaking up for yourself always pays off.

Here a few more dresses that come to mind:

Reasons To Travel

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I’ve been hit by the travelling bug. Last year, I was fortunate enough to travel to Trinidad, Spain, Gibraltar and the Dominican Republic just by creating the time and of course… budgeting. There’s a bit of a love-hate relationship with this adventure… I don’t mind flying, but I cannot stand the turbulence, sometimes how long the flight may take or even the jet lag. With that being said, traveling to another country has more positive aspects that outweigh the negative. Here are eight reasons why you should travel.

1. To De- Stress

When you are stressed about anything including work, school or home, it can be overwhelming. Traveling helps to break your daily routine and resets your mind off of anything that was giving you any form of anxiety. I compare this to jogging as well, since this also infuses the level of getting the creative juices flowing.

2. Meet New People

It’s always interesting to see how other people live elsewhere, plus there are always other travellers that come from all over the world.

3. Learn

Traveling is definitely a learning experience in all aspects. Whether you are leaning about the history of a country, or the religion, food, fashion, art, music and culture, you are not going to comeback being the same. Plus people who work in either a hostel or hotel will give you an enlightening perspective on life.

4. Have Fun

Since you’re spending the money to travel, you might as well have fun. What’s the point of leaving your home if you can’t explore a different country while having fun? You’re doing something wrong if otherwise.

5. The Scenery

Any country you visit will having something to offer in terms of scenery. This is an obvious factor when leaving your country to explore another. Nature always heals.

6. The Food

As a vegetarian this is a huge deal because some countries are not aware of I eat. I don’t find it frustrating, this is actually hilarious because the big aspect with my food lifestyle (since I hate the word diet) is that I don’t eat meat. This is always interesting to see what are main dishes to eat when visiting another country.

7. Stay Humble

When you are going to another country where English is not the first language, being humble is all that you have to be. You are a tourist in their country so you not only have to respect that fact, but, especially someone who lives in a country that has immigrants not speaking a word of English, it gives a sense of emphasizing. It can be a struggle but you’re only staying there for a short period of time as oppose to someone who for example is living in Canada for the longer haul. Just put yourself in their shoes.

8. Be Grateful

First off, if you we able to afford the trip in the first place to see how others live, you have to be grateful. There are people who need visas, be approved the a government for them to travel. As a Canadian all I need, in most countries, is a valid passport. Plus the living conditions elsewhere is nowhere compared to my lifestyle and I’m not even rich. I know that it is a privilege for me to visit another country, knowing that I will have a roof above my head when coming back. Not everyone has that privilege.

Beauty Products I can’t Live Without

Having a go to product can be a life saver. From the unwanted acne, to taking care of dry skin, that one formula can help in the long run. Here are eight products I just can’t live without.

1. Himalayan Charcoal Mask

himalayan-charcoal-purifying-glow-mask-17-640x640

Got oily skin? Do you occasionally break out with acne even after the teenage years? Are you trying to keep youthful? This is the product for you. It may sting a bit, but if you have all of the above, this product works miracles. The time limit to keep this on is ten minutes or less. It was made for oily skin plus it’s a vegetarian product.

2. The Clean Truth- Ole Henriksen

s1910413-main-zoom

You don’t need to pile on a lot of this face wash which is a bonus, plus it lasts for months. Some may say that this is priced high at $38, but it lasts for up to six months. You’re cutting costs if you’re only one using it and using it wisely. With Vitamin C being one of the focal ingredients within the product, your face is left vibrant, cleanly and moisturized.

3. Olive Oil

185042080

Olive oil is the magic for dry skin along with having a dry scalp. You cannot go wrong with this! Less is more.

4. Lipstick

17022368_10212333488720659_7733421352119724110_n

Ever since high school, lipstick has been apart of my signature look. Wearing different colours per season always sparks my creativity. Some days I’ll wear blue, red is not only my favourite colour but a standout, you can’t go wrong with a nice pink shade, purple is complementary for any season; the colours are endless along with the shades.

5. Hair Clippers

20170825_131615

Having a buzz cut means maintaining the cropped hairstyle. Every two weeks is a necessity when using my clippers.

6. Ginger Binge and Moscow Mule Highlighter

644890_gngr_bnge_mscw_mle_1_1

I know everyone is talking about Rihanna’s highlighter called Trophy Wife (which I plan on buying), but I really like this highlighter in particular. It’s more subtle and it also complements any skin tone. The Fenty Beauty products are animal cruelty free which is another bonus, plus a rarity.

7. Makeup Forever Mat Velvet Foundation

mat_velvet_37015_0

So since the Fenty Beauty foundations are sold out, specifically the deeper tones, I’m sticking with Makeup Forever’s foundation. This is a matte finish along with being waterproof so you can’t go wrong when it rains. The last thing thing that I love about this foundation is that it matches my skin to the tea. I’ve posted before about the struggles that I’ve had when finding the right match, along with mixing my moms foundation in order to get a decent look. Makeup Forever’s Mat Velvet foundation works wonders. I’m not settling!

8. Vitamins

E604139_000fr

I’m a vegetarian, so taking vitamins, specifically B12 is a must. I also believe that what you do internally will affect your outer appearance. Quite a bit of vegetarians are deficient in this vitamin due to the fact that meat is one of the only things that have this. It also has a lot of vital health benefits. I always suggest to ask your doctor or go to a grocery/drug store where you know that the government has approved of the products.

Basic Girl Banking: Thoughts I have When I Spend Money on Clothing

I have a confession to make.

First off, it’s evident that I love fashion since this blog caters to topics on dealing with style, etc., but I can’t stand shopping. Let me explain, I can go in a store find something that I like, claim that the item is mine without purchasing it, and get a rush as it goes in the shopping bag, but then I want to leave. I love went it’s short and sweet plus to the point, but my patience and attention span runs thin when in the mall in one space for a long amount of time. My mother can attest to this the most since she forewarns me which is what I need, but that does not mean that I don’t compromise… fashion is art so if I spend my money it better look good. Here are the thoughts I have when I spend money on clothing.

1. Do I really need to buy this?

This thought runs through my mind pretty much anytime I buy something in the mall that’s more pricey. I will only spend three digits on a pair of shoes that I know will last for at least five years because if not then I put it back and move on.

2. How will this look with the rest of my items in the closet?

Some accessories, clothing and shoes may be a stand out to the rest of your wardrobe.. sometimes for the good, at times for the bad. I’ve seen things that just won’t work with what I have. It happens.

3. How often will I wear this?

This goes hand in hand with the first question, it needs to be worth something in order for me to even consider buying the addition to my wardrobe.

4. If it’s expensive, I pretend that I can afford it nodding my head.

If I see a dress, fur coats (faux fur always) or anything that cost $600, I pretend to act bougie in the store and nod my head but leave seconds later.

5. This has my name written all over it.

Have you ever seen an outfit that just screamed you? I love moments like this because the decision is ten times more easier for me to go ahead and buy it on an impulse. Don’t judge I just know what I want.

6. It’s not the time to see how much I’ve spent in my account.

Usually I don’t go mad crazy on spending my money in the mall, but sometimes I like to treat myself so I don’t feel like looking at my account, there’s always another day for that. I’m not in denial… this just makes me more aware.

7. I can’t believe they’re playing this song in the store.

Have you ever been in a store and be surprised when the music was playing? It gets me every time I enter a somewhat snotty place and trap music lingers in the store; sometimes that’s the only reason why I’m in the store to be honest.

8. Okay it’s time to go now.

Patience is virtue, but not for me. When I know that I have everything that I need, it’s time to go elsewhere.

My Favourite Albums of 2017

I’ve been meaning to write about this subject much earlier, but since the Grammy nominations have been announced today, the timing could not be any better. This year music songs were not just about love and heartbreak, it was another year where artists openly spoke about race, sexism and politics. This list is based on what my favourite albums were this year, and last year. As the list goes on, there will be explanations as to why I chose certain albums to be on the list along with the standout songs from each record. These records are solely based on my opinions and no one else’s input… but I hope you enjoy. Here are the six albums that I enjoyed this year.

6. Lemonade- Beyonce

zzzz

I know this album was released over a year an a half ago, but there was no way for me to listen to it unless I downloaded Tidal which is owned by Beyonce’s hubby Jay Z. It was due to me being stubborn, that’s all I can say.So this year as I was coming back from Spain, on the plane, I finally got the chance to listen to the highly talked about album of last year. All I can say is thank you Beyonce for creating a masterpiece! With topics that dealt with love, being cheated on, and the Black Girl Magic movement along with black pride, Beyonce did not skip a beat. She took a risk and it definitely paid off. Who else thought that she deserved to win more Grammys this year? Awards are not everything which is why she needed to be on this list.

Standout Track: Formation

5. 4 Your Eyes Only- J Cole

zzz

For his precise and direct form of storytelling, I don’t think J Cole gets enough recognition. His fourth effort proves just that; with him reflecting on the death of his friend in the song Change or how cops broke into his house on Neighbours.  Even though he is not as commercial as the other rappers out there, I think that’s also why J Cole has a big following, (I saw him live so I have the proof), and why he has the voice that’s not only needed in Hip Hop, but art in general.

Standout Track: Deja Vu

4. 4:44- Jay Z

4

It is so fitting that Jay Z’s  13th album is placed at number four combined the album being called 4:44. So since Beyonce’s album was partially about Jay Z cheating on her, he responded with an album not only eloquent in expression, but mature within definition. It’s a response that puts no blame towards the other but shows that even as a respected artist like the Brooklyn native himself, Jay Z makes mistakes like everyone else. Some may say that Hip Hop has not been friendly towards the LGTBQ community, but again in the heartfelt song, Smile, Jay Z proves the critics towards his tribute to his mother coming out as a lesbian which is also a reflection to his relationship to her along with his wife.

Standout Tracks: The Story of O.J., Smile and 4:44

3. “Awaken, My Love!” – Childish Gambino

3

I was pleasantly surprised by Childish Gambino’s vocals. I knew he could sing, but not like Prince vocals along with the Jimi Hendrix inspired instruments. This psychedelic record from beginning to end embodies the eccentric quality, with the splash of soul and rock genres being combined. It doesn’t sound like any of his previous records which is why I feel like he should nab a few of those Grammy nominations. Plus the album cover grabs the attention, it certainly grabbed mine.

Standout Track: Redbone. Did anyone see the movie Get Out?

2.  Ctrl- SZA

RCA544919CD

Ever since I saw the singer-songwriter at Jhene Aiko’s concert a couple of years ago, I was hooked. SZA’s voice is one to be reckoned with and her debut album showcases that. It’s a modern twist with influences of  the 90’s R&B, but SZA owns every track on the record. It’s relatable, expressing the raw emotions of an everyday millennial like myself (fun fact we’re the same age), just being a normal girl while Netflix and chilling with her friend with benefits on the weekend on the effortless track The Weekend (sampled by one of my favourite songs from Justin Timberlake: Prelude/Until the End of Time). SZA beautifully describes the everyday struggles of life poetically and realistically.

Standout Tracks: The Weekend, Drew Barrymore, Love Galore Featuring Travis Scott and Normal Girl

1. DAMN- Kendrick Lamar

kendrick_damn_00

This year is where Kendrick Lamar stood out. It’s not necessarily just based on releasing his fourth album, but the buildup of how spectacular he has been over the last six years. Damn just cements the reason as to why he is needed in music period. It’s another solid effort that boldly goes onto his swagger in HUMBLE, his trace of royalty and loyalty in DNA, and his upbringing in FEAR. Kendrick Lamar is as woke as any Hip Hop artist can be in this era. The aggression in this record is as loud as rapper Ice T, woke like Public Enemy, and spiritual like Tupac. This album proves the importance of the art of storytelling combined with activism needed today. Albums like this will show over the years of how relevant it will be. Issues about race, body image and black culture won’t go away in a span of time. It’s evident that this was Lamar’s year. Plus I suggest if you like his music, go see him live if possible…it was the best birthday gift that I was able to see him on that day!

Standout Tracks: Humble, DNA, Loyalty Featuring Rihanna, God, Lust, Element, XXX featuring U2 and Fear

Screen Shot 2017-11-19 at 2.11.23 PM

This is probably one of the most accurate definitions from Urban Dictionary. Bougie is also a term particularly used for black people who are of upper class status or strive to be of that.

Apart of us all (kind of) want to be have the lifestyle that Hilary Banks from Fresh Prince of Bell Air  has or the queen of bougie… Whitley Gilbert from A Different World attains, however, not everyone can afford the things that these characters possess.

Screen Shot 2017-11-19 at 3.14.14 PM

Basic Girl Banking: Believe In Yourself

Sometimes the strength is truly in the numbers.

As humans we always rely on them. Great examples are measured by how tall we are, our weight, the size in our clothing, the length or our hair, and yes, how much money we have in the bank. Over time, the funds that are either apparent (or not) and cause a riff in our self esteem, personal and professional life along with how we treat others. We become so caught up in the materials aspect of life without at times looking at the big picture, plus when dealing finances it can be such a personal subject causing many to go through bouts of depression, families separating along with who you hang out with.

I may be no expert on what exactly someone may be going through in terms with finances along with any sort of mental illness, but I am proud of making it through college and handling my finances…all by myself, at a young age. Even though at times it was not easy, I look back at this struggle and carry myself with a sense of pride that I came out on top being able to write this blog post. This post is simply just about believing in yourself while setting realistic goals on Basic Girl Banking. It’s all positive vibes here!

Here are three easy steps.

1. Evaluate Your Spending Patterns

To some this is easier said than done. However, this is the  first step into evaluating how much money you are spending on a regular basis. We live in the digital age where it’s easy to go online and look at where you are spending your money. Ask yourself questions and evaluate. Are you a shopper? Do you spend you money on alcohol or cigarettes? Do you party often?  You have to be honest with yourself if you want to change your spending habits.

2. Know Your Value

I know this sounds like I am preaching but this is a true statement. You can’t start having goals with your finances if you don’t know value or believe in yourself with saving money. The spending patterns will stay the same, keeping you in a constant rut. If you really want to change how you deal with money then I suggest that you believe in yourself.

3. Be Kind To Yourself

When thinking about money, there can be so much stress. You start to wonder why you are not where you are in terms of money and along with being had on yourself simply because you have no money. As corny as it may sound, the money in your account does not make you a good or bad person… you define that. I compare this aspect to people who are on diets and want to lose weight or even gain weight, with money you have to be kind to yourself. Stop being so harsh and know that eventually you will get to where you have to get if you set a realistic goal. Someone who’s a sprinter doesn’t become the best overnight. A singer may not be able to hit all the right notes at hand. Joggers will not be able to jog the whole way. A dancer can’t learn all the right moves right at the spot. Students in class may not know all the math equations… but what do all of these people have in common? They practice.  Some may have sleepless nights while some may sleep it off and try again the next day because they don’t want to over exert themselves because they are kind to themselves.

So stay steady with the goals and you will start seeing progress. Keep on doing your Basic Girl Banking!

Introduction To Basic Girl Banking

I’m not rich by any means. However, working in a financial institution  for almost eight years have been a huge advantage when learning how to manage money along with setting realistic goals in terms of budgeting.

So why is this titled Basic Girl Banking? At first it sounded cool but also because the word basic means to spend within your means or just be realistic on how to spend your money. This is just a term designed to help anyone on the simple steps on how to save, save save while enjoying your money.

So many feel that they are in a rut when coming to their finances, and I am here to tell you this, saving money is not easy but it’s also not impossible. In the next few weeks I will go through the steps on how I have saved money, spent within my realistic goals of budgeting, while enjoying what I have saved. But, here is five easy ways to save. The holidays are just coming by so enjoy.

1.Open a Savings Account

Opening a savings may not ensure that you will automatically save your money but this is a start in terms of setting a disciplinary action for any sort of future goals. Are you planning on travelling within a few months? Or are you planning to buy your first car? Whether this is a long term goal or short term, a savings will help big time.

2. Put a Percentage From Your Paycheque into That Savings

So the first part may be the easiest thing to do, but in terms of putting money aside, that’s another story. However, even if you put $10 aside from every pay you get into your account, that adds up quickly. Think of it this way, on average in Canada, people get paid every two weeks so divide the calendar year in half, you’re still saving $260 into your account.

3. Be Realistic

So if you are not rich like Oprah Winfrey or any other notable billionaire on this planet, please set a realistic goal in terms of money. I’m not at all saying that you can’t attain this goal but just be realistic. If lets say right now you can take a look at your account and see how much you spend on a monthly basis along with how much you’re saving… this is what I am talking about. I’m sure Oprah had to be realistic about her assets when starting out, and so should you.

4. Spend Within Your Means

Okay, if you are already in debt and you can’t seem to escape the stress, don’t put yourself in more debt. That word by many can be a bad omen, but this is not always the case. It is only bad when let’s say you are increasing the limits on your Line of Credit, your credit cards or even Overdraft Protection just to spend the money on useless items. If you don’t need it, don’t spend it. Plus if the gorgeous jacket was on sale for $100, you’re still spending $100. I love a good sale but if I don’t need (and I mean that if I am in real need), then I won’t spend my money.

5. Set Goals

This ties into my first part about opening a savings account and setting either a long term goal or a short term goal. What do you plan on doing with your money? Is this for an investment? Are you going back to school? What about that trip that you were planning to go for next Spring? There are so many avenues to go on, so setting goals will help set a structured goal.

I have so much more to say so I will keep this post short because I am not finished with the advice. Until then… do your Basic Girl Banking and have fun with it.

The Importance of Fenty Beauty

Screen Shot 2017-08-25 at 1.11.29 PMAt a young age I did not like my skin, I hated it. I was not dark skinned but I also was not light enough and this was not only apparent in my life but also in the media where not much representation was displayed. As little as four I would scratch my skin thinking that the brown would go away.

I did not start wearing makeup until I was in college. Yes when there was graduations from both elementary school along with high-school, I felt like dressing up, but the bare face was what I was comfortable with. In high-school, I was comfortable in my skin, yes I even loved it, the teenage years was a time where you are trying to find who you are and these were one of those ‘coming of age’ moments… brown skinned and all.

When considering the process of shopping for makeup, there was this instinct that there would be a struggle with finding the right shade of foundation. This was always proven to be correct. These makeup artists would always go for either the lightest shade or the darkest one not even matching the tone of my skin which is surprisingly difficult but I always laughed at the process because they were convinced that the foundation looked amazing on me, but at home was another story.

For me foundation is almost like going out on a date, if it doesn’t work, you move on to the next one, if it does work then you will keep this around and see how this unfolds. Trust me, I have been through so much foundation that I can write a comedy sketch. From ones where I had mix with my mothers because the shade had red undertones to others which would oxidize less then half a work shift or when I had to be on camera for school in journalism… I knew I deserved better. Then there were foundations created by black women but not distributed near where I lived, this was a daily struggle.

I did find my match with Makeup Forever which not only is oil free but has a matte finish for my oily skin, but then Rihanna came out with her Fenty Beauty and that was a wrap.

Screen Shot 2017-09-28 at 1.03.49 PM

I almost freaked out when I found out that the superstar released 40 shades ranging from pale complexions to dark… I needed to head to Sephora. At first I thought this was too good to be true, after all I been through a lot of shades in this life (pun intended). Also if I wanted to commit with her line of foundation, there had to be some commitment involved because I was not going to buy this out of impulse. With that being said, I loved it. The foundation was light in feeling but with the right amount of coverage for my oily-acne skin. A great feature for this product is that it is cruelty free… there was something quite revolutionary about the whole release by Rihanna and the timing could not be any better.

Screen Shot 2017-09-28 at 1.07.43 PM

A few may say that this is just foundation, but like myself, others beg to differ. I seen wonderful posts whether on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or any other post on the internet about how this foundation has changed them. This is not even women who have darker complexions, but women who are pale or even who have Albinism.  Wearing foundation is about finding the right match while feeling beautiful along with being accepted and noticed by the beauty industries. Rihanna and other people who are inclusive to the standards of beauty has set not only and example but the stage for major makeup brands to include all people when releasing a foundation, bronzer or anything dealing with makeup. The beautiful thing about this is that I am right now wearing 410 but when winter comes along, I get a little bit lighter, I can choose another shade from her line.

There is not just one form of beauty, all shades are amazing. I truly believe that Rihanna payed attention and catered to all shades creating what is truly unique and also… skin deep.

The Buzz-Cut: Timeless, Chic and Badass

Ten years ago if you had told me that I would be rocking such a brave hairstyle at 27, the buzz cut, I would’ve laughed at you! Like many young girls, teenagers becoming women and grown adults (most particularly women of colour), our hair is our attachment. But, for me, this was my shell.

My hair had protected me from the  excruciatingly cold Canadian weather, from anyone judgemental, my father because he loves any girl with long hair (like many guys in general, or so I think), from anyone who felt as though having an opinion on any women’s hair was the end all that we needed to abide by for whatever reason, as if it was any of their business as to what we do with our hair in this world because a women’s beauty solely is in our hair (someone told me that), and lastly, my growth in life.

One of the reasons as to why I had never thought of cutting my hair off is because I loved changing my hair on a regular basis. Like I have said before in my previous blog posts, I can be rocking red hair one day, then rock a purple boxed braid hairstyle the next. Plus I was hiding in my hair. That was all about to change.

I am going to point out that I was always terrified of both Grace Jones and Sinead O’Connor without reasoning as a child. With this being said when you look at Grace Jones she evokes power and fierceness while Sinead O’Conner just does not give a shit period. These two people, as far as I can remember growing up terrified me because they were going against the “norm”  of what being female meant. Today I thank them for their bravery along with putting this style into the limelight because rocking no hair means no hiding.

Before them, down in history, a women wearing a buzz-cut had negative connotations. When slaves were taken to North America, both black men and women had to shave their hair in order not only symbolize that they were slaves, but denied any African traditions that were carried in the past. In different parts of Europe, men would shave a women’s hair in order to embarrass her which today’s terms was slut shaming her, and for skinheads this is also a popular choice of style.

Still to this day many feel as though one of the only reasons why women in particular has shaved their hair is due to an illness, they have lost their minds (I’m remembering Britney Spears in 2007), or a male bashing feminist. Another generalization that women get for doing this cut is being a lesbian, which there is nothing wrong with this at all, do you… love is love. However the fact that people tie in a women’s length of hair with her sexuality is straight up stupid, there are no and’s of if’s about that, stop the stereotyping.

Screen Shot 2017-08-25 at 1.27.46 PMI have been natural since 2010 deciding to never have any chemicals altar the texture of my hair, I was 20 years old at the time, at 21 I cut my hair into a pixie- like afro and man did I feel brave! It was of course uneven because I had used scissors which is a big no no when you are a beginner with them. It was when I turned 23 that I decided to rock a buzz cut. The decision was a numb one because at first I did not think that I would go through with this, but it happened.  When the barber had first placed the clippers at the top of my hear (that was the first place he decided to cut my hair), I was thought oh shit, there was literally no turning back. My first thought was if I was looking like a man which is what any women’s thought is when it’s first time shaving your head! But over a week I was feeling myself (in Beyonce’s voice). The feedback was overall good while some were haters as I call them or just plain stupid with the cancer remarks, but I let it slide and mind my own business. The one thing you will know about me is I give no shits what other people think about me. When dealing with confidence I live by these two quotes: it’s none of my business what others think about me, and, I feel good… I look good (I made that one up and say every time I leave the house), because at the end of the day you have to wake up and live with how you look. Why not love yourself in the process?

EveAfter almost two years of growing my hair out due to pure laziness and experimentations with other hairstyles, I decided that it was time to shave it all off again. There was no second thoughts or even being scared because I’ve done this before and this time it was different. I was writing about the female rappers of the ’90s titled How Female Rappers of The 90’s Influenced Fashion, and when it came to writing Eve’s part of the article, I thought damn I would look good with this style, Eve killed the blonde buzz cut that was her signature,  and my mom said the same thing, so the next week I went to the barber cut my hair, and the rest was history. I felt as light as a butterfly and a new chapter was opened in my life. There was a newfound confidence that money could not by plus now I cut my own hair with my own clippers.

This year has also been the year of the buzz cuts.  You see actresses like Lupita N’yongo, Sanaa Lathan, Amandla Stenburg along with another celebrities rocking the style. In the modelling world a buzz cut is unique style that many up and coming acts like Slick Woods (born Simone Thompson) and Ruth Bell who have both been propelled in the limelight partially due to their  cropped haircut. Of course I have to mention Miss Amber Rose, honestly if you are a women that has a buzz cut, you will be compared to her since she has made this a staple from the beginning of her time in the spotlight.

Many feel as though this is a trend but I disagree. Wearing a buzz cut takes a lot of guts. It’s not just about posting on social media the style while asking others if they should style their hair this way ( a big ass pet peeve of mine, I see this shit all the time, just cut it). Or wearing a wig all-the-time after you cut your hair. I am not saying this is wrong but everyday? That means that you wasted your money plus you did not think twice before committing. That is just my stance on this. When you cut your hair at such a short length, that means you have no where hide from, plus you have to commit to this for at least six months then you can grow it out, which is no big deal. A buzz cut also brings out features that you may have never thought that you had with hair. For some reason my eyes look bigger but that’s just my perception. For people in general when they see a woman rock no hair, it is a perceived sense of confidence, you have nothing to hide and there is no need to either. The buzz cut is one of the only timeless styles. Look at the photos above with Grace Jones, Sinead O’Connor and Eve, those pictures were taken at least 20 to 30 years ago, this is proof that this is not a dated look and there is elegance behind it.  Femininity comes from within and as a wise person by the name of Joan Juliet Buck wrote in 1988 for American Vogue essay that short hair removes obvious femininity and replaces it with style. I have never felt this sort of confidence as I do with this cut. This is definitely a signature style for me. I don’t have to comb my hair, I can dye it without worrying about any damage, and I can be myself, live freely without hiding. I am too old to impress other people, sorry if that is selfish but this is my body my terms. For many women a buzz cut breaks away from the normal standards of beauty shown on a daily basis… we are saying pretty much fuck you and your standards without saying anything.  Now that is badass!
