My Favourite Instagram Style Posts of 2016

If you know me as a person… you know that I have a love for Instagram. This social media platform specializes in displaying quality pictures along with the availability of writing some captions. This is a great way for fashion bloggers to showcase their style along with promoting their blog (hence Public Relations anyone).

As a blogger who likes to showcase style and wit on the gram, I have some favourite outfits from the pictures that I have posted on instagram. Here some some of my favourite outfit posts. P.S. the captions will all be from my instagram posts.

Ice cream and shit

screen-shot-2017-01-11-at-9-29-51-pm

It’s summer time and I am feeling the weather along with my outfit. This black top if my one of my favourites to rock in the summer because of the fun behind the style. A little bling on the sandals are also a bonus along with of course… ice scream (you can’t forget about that).

The Colour Purple

purple

I had a lot of fun with rocking the purple braids. There was a youthful yet neat and professional vibe to the bob-styled hair. The contrast with the black and pink top brought everything together in this picture. What would you call a hair selfie? Helfie?

Early birthday turnup because… that’s how it’s supposed to be.

screen-shot-2017-01-11-at-9-29-33-pm

This blue romper is a saviour in my closet! When the summer comes… this blue gem comes out and I can wear this to any event especially for Leo season which is at the time of by birthday. Where are the Leos at?

Another year has gone by… many blessings came along

bdayy

I always compare dressing for your birthday is like dressing your Sunday best… you just have to wear the best time. This funky romper adds the zest plus it was my birthday so I had to kill with the brown netted heals!

When friends are running on black people time…

Another selfie… another cool outfit… another slayage.

I gotta stay fly til I die

This hair was inspired by the talented singer-songwriter Alicia Keys; plus you always have to dawn a pair of Chuck Taylors’ every now and then. Did anyone else get that my caption was from 3 6 Mafia’s hit song?

The 6 life… (I wish)

I always imagine what it would be like moving back to Toronto… here’s to dreaming like Jimi Hendrix.

A Hamiltonian Diva is about to see Mary J.Blige … thee Hip Hop Diva

mjb-concert

I could not leave the house and head to a Mary J.Blige concert and not wear a faux fur jacket… that would be a disgrace. The turban style is a bonus.

We came to scream our asses of tonight. Let’s go raptors!

raptors

Clearly we are fans of Toronto’s basketball team raptors! They did win that night making it to play against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

My mom wanted me to send her a pic.

I will admit that she helped to choose the dress so it was only fair. She knows my style like no other.

When you’re at family but your outfit is on fleek so you have to post on the gram

thanksgiving

From my natural hair, red dress, booties, gold choker and my stud earrings… I was dressed at my Sunday best… hammer style!

To Americans Who Want to Move to Canada

Did anyone see Barack Obama’s speech last night? Tear jerking. I cannot believe that eight years has gone by since he came in the White House as the 44th President. With the the timing it does makes sense; I was 18 at the time when he won, now I am 26 but time is flying by way too fast.

Now it is 2017, this is my 21st blog post and yes I did take a little break from blogging and work with some R&R in sweet sweet T&T (Trinidad and Tobago) where I ate all of the great foods including roti, black cake, having doubles for breakfast and drank all of the punch de creme and sorrel. Coming back to the cold weather in Canada made me want to fly back to the heat quickly, but I do love this country and I am a proud Canadian (Trini).

So back to American politics. For all Americans trying to immigrate to Canada, it will be hard, but I have a few things that you will need in order to be a true Canuck. Here we go!

Bring Winter Gear

Places like Vancouver will be nice and relatively warm this time of the year so all of you Americans who are coming from warmer climates will adjust to that kind of weather. However, if you are coming to Provinces like Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba etc… bring your winter gear. Have warm clothing that includes a nice, warm pair of water protected boots, a coat, some gloves of mittens and of course your head gear because you certainly can’t survive below zero degree (Celsius) weather.

Become a Fan of a Canadian Sports Team

canada3

This is not a suggestion… it’s a must! Whether you like hockey, football and of course basketball (I am biased… go Raptors go), you must convert quickly or be aware of the teams that represent the great North. P.S. Drake nights are usually on Wednesdays for the Raptors team.

Don’t Forget Your Timmies

canada2

There’s not one place in Canada where you can’t find a Tim Hortons… they are everywhere. The coffee shop’s first restaurant is located in Hamilton, Ontario; where I and of course hockey player Tim Horton is from. The prices are decent and the food is not too bad, but don’t forget your timbits. Those little bite-sized donuts are the ultimate Canadian snack… munch on!

Protective Hairstyles

canada8

If you know about natural hair (not chemicals) with the kinks, curls, coils and any texture in between, then you will understand why protective hairstyling is so important in the colder weather. Curlier textures tend to dry out more quickly than straight hair. Hairstyles like boxed braids, (located above) cornrows and twist lock in the moisture along with cutting down the time of styling your own hair. Strategizing is always a must.

A Cute Pair of PJ’s

canada7

You can’t hate on a comfortable pajama outfit.

The Food

There are so much variety when it comes to food. Poutine is one of the staple foods for Canada and also a must to eat; forget the calories. I’m a vegetarian so of course I will look for options like falafels (this includes chickpeas), roti and a black bean burger because… why not!

Diversity

63afcb84d97f714e9c4b82b98b0d1818.jpg

Unlike so many who are not Canadian, this country strives on diversity. From the Pride Parade that occurs in June to Caribana ( which is one of the biggest events in the country : 1 million people around the world come to celebrate Caribbean culture in Toronto) we get lit (or shall I say having fun). Then there is festivals that celebrate Greek culture in cities like Toronto along with other festivities going on throughout the year. You can achieve so much in this country without having to worry about not being accepted for who you are.  Like what author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said:

“Culture does not make people. People make culture,”

This is a fact.

Enjoy The Great Outdoors

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

From Quebec City to Montreal which gives you a feeling like if you are in France to the great outdoors of Ontario,  along with Provinces that I myself has not visited yet like Nova Scotia, Alberta and many other beautiful places. The country is big and great to explore. I may try to visit Vancouver soon.

Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residence

1401f66865a9f8b1e388b128f2760bfd.jpg

These two recommendations are a must or else you will be deported back to the U.S. It’s definitely not easy getting a Canadian citizenship like some people may think. Some people opt to apply for permanent residence in order to work within the country. When you get your citizenship… this will be worth the wait.

This is to all Americans trying so hard to come here,

Good luck!

Holiday Decorations That I love Seeing

Christmas is such a hectic time of the year, but I love every bit of the holiday. From the dressing to the Xmas decorations, you can have fun with the ever so popular holiday. With the help of Pinterest, I’ve put together some pictures to inspire people to get into the holiday mood. Here are some holiday decorations that I love seeing.

A Beautiful Christmas Tree

During this time of the year I love seeing people bring out the creative juices by decorating their trees inside their homes. It’s a great accessory and these trees displays a person’s personality right in front of your eyes. A tree should always be four things: glitzy, glamorous, classy and timeless.

Gingerbread Houses

xmasgingerbread3xmasgingerbread2xmasgingerbread

When food looks too good to eat, you know that you have done an excellent job in pleasing a guest’s eye along with fooling them not to eat a gingerbread house.

Wreaths

xmaswreaths

What a lovely outside decoration. Sometimes less is more and there is not always a need to decorate your house with lights… wreaths on your door is great accessory.

The Lights

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

What’s Christmas without lights? Completely boring in my opinion. There is something magical about either walking by a house or driving by a store and lights are beaming at night time. Christmas lights complete the holidays.

Ugly Sweater Season

xmasuglysweaters

Don’t ever through out that ugly sweater that your aunt or another relative gave you last year! This holiday is all about having fun and not taking yourself too seriously. They are not considered decorations but it is apart of the Christmas culture so get creative with them.

Garlands

xmasgarlands

This is a modern approach for this season. You cannot go wrong with decorating your home with garlands.

Holiday Dressing

You can get extra glamorous for December 25th. It’s a celebration so why not dress your best.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Let’s Talk About Ciara’s Style

Ciara may be one of the best dancers of the 21st century. As a singer-songwriter and dancer, there is no denying that at times her talents are often underrated.  With this being stated, I am not here to talk about her music. For the past few years Miss CiCi has stepped up her game when coming to her way of dressing. Her style has helped her get endorsements along with being signed as a model to IMG. Here is a showcase of some of Ciara’s best style moments.

All Black Everything

ciara2013ciarablack

There is something very confident about this whole look. She was surely feeling herself… with reason. Ciara looked chic with her short bob along with the black blazer, dress and black gladiator sandals.

All About the Benjamins

I loved everything about this look. This was taken place at the BET Awards in 2013 when Ciara was still with rapper Future. The attire brings back memories from Ciara’s earlier days (Goodies era) combined with Aaliyah’s tomboy chicness.

Tomboy Chic

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Like the late singer Aaliyah along with Janet Jackson, Ciara has mastered the tomboy style in such a refined way. There’s no surprise as to why she is constantly being compared to both artists mentioned above.

Slaying MTV

By far her most edgiest fashion statements  of her career and also one of my favourite looks from the singer. You not only need the figure to pull off an outfit like this but the confidence has to pull the look together. This is a look that can be a total mess or slayage at its best. CiCi slayed this look.

More Award Season

From the architectural designs to the shimmery metallic dresses, there is one thing that these dresses have in common and it is Ciara’s delivery on holding her own. Congrats on expecting baby number two!

All Dressed in White

ciaraallwhite

This was not too long after the singer had her first child. The fact that she is showing her tummy gives all women the confidence.

Met Gala Finesse

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I almost did not recognize Ciara with this look; I might also add that I was pleasantly surprised with the statement that she created at the Met Gala event. The Met Gala events are all about having fun along with not taking fashion too seriously…Ciara was having fun with this! The look was timeless (Great Gatsby feel) with a futuristic blend due to her silver hair.

Meet The Wilsons

ciarathebride1ciara-the-bride

The bride has arrived and has also delivered! There’s a reason why Ciara’s middle name is Princess because she looked like royalty at her wedding with this Victorian styled dress that had a long trunk from behind. Simply majestic.

4 Fashion/Beauty Gifts To Buy on A Budget

In less than three weeks Christmas will be arriving. It seems as though gift shopping gets harder and harder each year not knowing what to buy for friends and family… especially for that one person who is obsessed with fashion and makeup. Prices can be pretty expensive when buying these items, but this does not always have to be the case. I have four products that you can buy as Christmas gifts for the value of the price… discounts are included.

Kingsley Satchel Bag by Guess ($70.00 CAD was $140.00 ; http://www.guess.ca)

xmasmacbookprocase13

This is the most expensive gift on this post, but it is worth it for the fashionista who is always on the go and also in the industry. If they have a 13 inch macbook pro or any other lap top within that size, then this is the perfect gift for them. I might consider buying this for myself for my macbook laptop. The colour is a nice feature too.

Malamocco Earrings by Aldo ($15.00 http://www.aldoshoes.com)

xmasearrings

You cannot go wrong with buying some statement earrings. These fancy jewelled earrings add the spark to any outfit, and the best thing about this is that it won’t break your budget for a gift. It’s low in stock so splurge on!

Faux Gem Choker by Forever 21 ( $16.90; http://www.forever21.com)

xmaschoker

Chokers are one of the biggest and popular items for buy for 2016 and this trend is not dying in 2017. There is no going wrongs with buying a Christmas gift for someone who loves chokers for the holidays.

Mac Lipstick ($21.00; http://www.maccosmetics.ca)

xmasmaclippy

Some may feel as though twenty-dollars is a pricey gift for a single lipstick, but for Mac lipstick it is worth the price. It goes on so smoothly without any fading. I suggest if you know the person really well, buy this for them, they will thank you for this. If you happen to be a member of Mac, keep you makeup because they give you a free lipstick.

The Coolness of FKA Twigs

So many musicians try to be as weird as possible to the point where it looks unreal. There are only few that are weird to the point of being disturbing and some that are just amazing for being who they are… straight up weird. Tahliah Barnett who stage name is FKA Twigs has a uniqueness that some just cannot obtain. The singer-songwriter and dancer evokes a different sort of artistic expression that stands out in the music industry in this century. Here are seven reasons to get on FKA Twigs’ level of coolness.

Her style

fkastyleefkastylefkastyleeeeefkastyleeeefkastyleeefkastyleeeeee

There is an ethereal quality to Twigs’ style combined with an edgy twist to it. From the aztec prints to funky designs with makeup, and I can’t forget her iconic septum piercing, this unpredictable singer can get away with any style.

Her Music

When I first heard Twigs’ first album LP1, I was surprised of how much I loved the album. The production is not cohesive at all, it’s all over the place and very convoluted… which is one of the reason why this critically acclaimed work is an album to remember. Twigs wrote every one of her songs on the album and all of the producers (who happens to be very popular like Paul Epworth who produced Adele’s blockbuster album 21) but created a sound all on her own terms. My favourite tracks on the LP are Two Weeks, Pendulum, Video Girl and Lights On. If you are someone who loves Electronic music with an R&B splash (or loves The Weeknd) then take a listen to her music.

Her Dance Moves

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

She is the queen of voguing which is a dance move that was created in the early 90’s. Twigs was originally a dancer before making on her own as a singer. Being a dancer explains the reason as to why she is called FKA Twigs… her joints would crack. According to an interview, FKA does not mean anything.

Her Hair

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

When I see Twigs’ hair, I see innovation along with a nostalgic reference, hence the Rick James hairstyle with beads and the braids. Talk about black girl magic!

Her Lyrics

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-9-14-10-pmscreen-shot-2016-11-30-at-9-14-39-pmscreen-shot-2016-11-30-at-9-16-59-pmscreen-shot-2016-11-30-at-9-15-39-pm

Every lyric on each song has a dark undertone to it, but it’s relatable due to the vulnerability behind them.

The Videos

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Twigs tries to created images that will either comfort you or disturb you. There is no in between… either you like her or you don’t. Take it or leave it.

The Weirdness

fkaweirdddfkaweirddfkaweirdfka1

You may not understand the message behind the singer’s images on an album cover or music videos, but watch it a few times and the message will scream loud and clear. There’s a truthful story that resonates with today’s society. Some of her topics that she displays are issues dealing with depression, anxiety, sexism, love and feminism.

I will also state that this 28 year old singer has been through a lot when coming to racist comments on her instagram account due to her dating Twilight’s  Robert Patterson. She defended herself with the level of grace and passion showing you that it is important to stick up for yourself even as a celebrity.

Where to Shop on Cyber Mondays

If you were one of those people who avoided the crowd this weekend due to Black Friday, you were not missing out. Most websites that sell products online will have deals off for people avoiding the crowds during the holiday season. Here are some places to shop online.

Forever 21 (www.forever21.com/CA)

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-4-15-43-pm

This website is all about the sales. You just can’t go wrong with deals that match the quality of sales… there is no arguing.

Guess (www.guess.ca)

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-4-15-18-pm

I know some people may say that Guess is overpriced and they may have a point. With that being said I look at this store like how I look at Winners; it may be hard to find something you like at a decent price but when you do, the item is truly a winner.

ASOS (asos.com)

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-4-15-08-pm

One of my favourite features that this online British store has to offer is that it does not charge you extra for shipping and handling. Another aspect is the unique jewelry and clothing items it has to offer. Today the sale prices are up to 60 percent off. Not too shabby!

HMV (www.hmv.ca)

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-4-15-57-pm

Like many music junkies including myself, one of the best Christmas gifts you can give is something dealing with music. HMV does not disappoint on their deals.

Indigo (chapters.indigo.ca)

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-4-16-10-pm

Buying a book or even kindle (electronic books) for Christmas (or any occasion) is never a bad idea. Try to take advantage of their Cyber Monday deal.

Sephora (www.sephora.com)

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-4-16-27-pm

Sephora is all about the quality, so when they have deals that go through the roof, you better take advantage of the prices.

The Best Fashion Style From Michelle Obama

Today for many Americans, it’s voting day, a historical day when citizens choose who will be the President of the United States. Whoever is voted in office, this at times daunting and long election will affect Americans and Canadians like myself.

On a bright note, fashion wise, Michelle Obama over the years has dazzled us with some of the best dressed styles for the eight years Barack Obama has been President. Often compared to (another best-dressed) first-lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Michelle has left an impact to many impressionable people around the world. Like many (including myself), it is a sad day to see the Obamas leave, including the departure of Mrs. Obamas chic style. Here are some of my favourite fashion moments for Michelle Obama without any order.

2008: Barack Obama becomes the First Black President of U.S.A.

barack-and-michelle-obama-and-family-2008

One word: historical. People all over the world saw a monumental moment happen before their eyes. The First Lady wore a red and black dress, making  presidential statement all in her own way. How Michelle O’ of her.

2009: Inauguration

This dress was everything. From the flow, to the colour and the texture. Michelle looked flawless!

Something Yellow

Yellow is a fire colour and it brightens up anyone’s day. This dress is no different. Radiance at it’s best!

Blazer Season

michelle-obama-blazer-pantsuit-outfits

I couldn’t choose just one blazer. One thing to note about wearing blazers are the versatility with them. The tailoring behind all of Obama’s suits are impeccable.

Dress Season

From the royal blue, the funky patterned dress and the glowing white gown. Michelle proved once again that her style cannot be touched.

Looking Like Royalty

Flotus is on fleek! Blue is her colour.

The Second Inauguration

michelle-obama-57th-presidential-inauguration-20131

The second inauguration was just as memorable as the first one. Michelle knew she had to make a fashion statement once more with this elegant coat that she wore.

Bold in Red

For being such a tall person this dress enhances her height along with colour brightening her complexion.

Glitter, Gold and All Things Bright

Michelle over years showed the world with confidence how to rock sequin and metallic dresses. All of them are my favourite.

There will not be a better first lady (or man) for some time. Combined with style, Michelle as a woman, mother, daughter, student and wife has taught a world a valuable lesson. To rise above the occasion with grace.

“When they go low, we go high,”- Michelle Obama

Natural Hair: More Than Just a Fad

I love my hair. From the little curly ringlets to the volume of the kinks… it screams versatility. From the extensions that transforms you eyes turning into boxed braids to numerous afro puffs that stands taller than the rest, there’s a reason why you stand out in the crowd without saying a word. Did I mention that I can flat iron it? Only when the cooler weather comes due to the humidity in the air. But constant heat is a no no in the natural hair world for good reasons (dryness).

You see…the topic of natural hair has always resonated with me. I will have to admit something that some may or may not know.  Growing up I hated my hair. The texture was all too wrong. The Barbie dolls, including the black ones did not have hair like mine. Let’s not mention the shampoo commercials. All of the models flashed their horse-like tresses in the t.v. and I envied this. Why did it grow out differently?   Why did I not have the long, bone straight hair like the others?  Why didn’t I have the good hair? Girls in my school were blessed with this. Magazines praised that texture of hair (even some black hair magazines), but I hardly saw the kinky curly fro on any of these magazines, and if so… these women were often radical. Relaxing your hair, which is chemically straightening the texture of your hair, was considered ideal, almost healthy to wear this style. Nothing wrong with a good relaxer, but through the years… it was truly painful to go through. My hair would fall out constantly due to my hair being fine; I can go on about the struggle being real but you get the point. Then there was a term that struck close, a very personal term:

Nappy.

It strikes me like a knife. Cold. Sore. Bitter and downright depressing. That other n-word is not an uplifting word to say the least. When people describe my hair and many others’ with the word nappy there is no boost of confidence. This word screams suppression with a fist and I plan to break it down with my midas touch. Cross that word out completely out of your head.

One of the first music artists that I noticed growing up had showed appreciation for their natural hair was Melanie Brown (aka Spice Girls: Scary Spice) which is also another reason why she was my favourite out the five in the girl group. She was brass, confident and gave no shit what anyone thought about her and she iconically rocked her two large bantu knots effortlessly. Another artist who has also rocker her hair and made it huge in mainstream music (and also released one of my favourite albums and critically acclaimed to date)… Lauryn Hill. Those dreadlocks gave life in a world that does not have high standards for that hairstyle. But Miss Hill and Oscar award winner Whoopi Goldberg rises above the occasion.

As a grew up, my views started to change. Why did I hate my hair? I have one word and three syllables: media.

The media has a lot to do with your life. From the decisions you make when buying groceries to what makeup you buy and of course what hair products to buy to the level of social status… the media can sway your decision on just about anything. You know the term words cut deeper than a knife… well. It affects the music you buy and who to vote for in an election. There’s the good, the bad and the ugly. Being a woman of colour has it’s ugly side effects when coming to the media. Look at eight years ago when Barack Obama was running for president… who did they also attack? Michelle Obama with a radical/militant outfit along with of course (an Angela Davis reference) dawning an afro. Need I say more?

Music was and always will be a saviour for me. It saved the life of my hair and also had me changing my question from why I hate my hair to why I love it. Before I answer this will state a few things here. You may not look like my or have the same texture of hair as I do but I will let you embed this thought in your head:

When someone brings your self-esteem down it hurts.

This is just like when someone calls another fat, ugly, stupid, a faggot, dike, skinny, nappy-headed or the other n-word, and any other offensive word… it hurts. There is pain with these words. I don’t care what anyone says. Your outlook on everything with these words matter. You can change it around. Why does my hair grow out differently? It’s a crown. I don’t have to wear a hat to hide this gem. It glows brightly like a halo beaming for others to see. Why did I not have the long, bone straight hair like the others? Oh the versatility! From braids, bantu knots, afro puffs, a buzzed cut to tapered cuts and even wigs. I can change my hair on a daily basis the way I change my outfits. The possibilities are endless!  Yes… I do have the good hair. It’s soft, silky, fluffy and when it’s washed it shrinks (which I dread) but the tight curls are on fleek.

Yes I do love my hair. No media platform, or any foolish fashion designer claiming a hairstyle (bantu knots) will make my hair a fad. Nope not ever.

Fall/Winter Items I Will Be Rocking

With fall being one of the shortest seasons of the year… winter is coming. What the two seasons have in common is the harsh coolness. Here are some fashion items I am excited to wear this year all season.

Booties

20161021_150052

My booties (or boots) add some flair to all of my outfits. From the gold buckles to the warm dark brown colour, this shoe screams fall… all the way to winter. The best aspect of my boots is the comfort; I can wear these all day without any complaints.

Faux Fur Coat

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This pastel pink faux fur coat adds excitement and fun all throughout fall and winter. This goes greatly with my curly afro. I can’t wait to dawn  this at the Christmas parties!

Red Faux Fur Vest

20161024_181456

If I don’t feel like wearing the full on fur coat I can just rock this. It was huge hit last year and I pretty sure this year will be no different.

The Red Dress

20161009_104806

Probably one of my favourite dresses in my closet. The versatility is what I like and the price isn’t too bad either. Every woman needs a red dress.
