17 Things To Know About Me

Hello world! I know that it has been two months since I last wrote on my blog. There is nothing to worry about, I have been so busy living my life to the fullest, but I will never stop writing. Blogging is my therapy. With that being said, Hammer Style Girl is going to get a little bit of a makeover. Trust it is nothing too dramatic but stay tuned. Today I will be doing an introduction on myself. When starting this blog I never wrote about who I am as a person and feel that is vital to know what I am about so you can understand Hammer Style Girl. So here it is… 16 facts about me, Paula Tobias.

1. I’m An Avid Jogger

Screen Shot 2017-08-25 at 1.28.02 PM

Since the day that I started walking, I have always loved running. I previously had a blog about jogging called The Jogging Diaries, which was all about jogging (of course), other forms of exercise, healthy food along with healthy living, and of course… nature. This was the birth of my blogging.

2. I Love to Dance

18268193_10155246986887512_3159132550357719100_n

In high-school I was in a samba squad dancing to different forms of choreography like samba, hip hop and other forms of ballroom dancing. But this has never left my lifestyle. I just need to find a club to dance to salsa!

3. I am 27

Screen Shot 2017-08-25 at 1.11.50 PM

I am aware that this age is still quite young, but til this day I still get asked for i.d. which gets so annoying (but I don’t mind it) at times. Being born in the beginning of the 90s is cool since the fashion of that decade has made a comeback.

4. I Picked Up Writing Stories at 8 Years Old

13

Writing has always been therapy for me. Like many who have been through bullying, I wrote my truth through stories along with creating make believe storytelling as therapy along with connecting with people which has taken me far with my teachers and professors alike.

5. I’m a Journalism Graduate (My Grad Pick Below)

Screen Shot 2017-08-25 at 9.26.19 PM

Since storytelling was my niche, I decided to take the skills and elevate them through journalism which gave me another skill for life.

6. I Can Edit Videos

Placeholder Image

I am thankful for obtaining my Journalism Advanced Diploma for many reasons. The one skill that I have perfected is video editing. It comes naturally but this is a lot of work along with being very time consuming( like 5 hours of editing a video), but the end process is golden!

7. I’ve Been in The Banking Industry for Almost 8 years

Screen Shot 2017-08-25 at 9.35.16 PM.png

The time has truly flown. I just remember starting as a teller (or customer service representative) at 19. Working in the bank has thought me some valuable skills when coming to manage basic banking skills. I cannot wait to introduce my version of Basic Girl Banking on my series for Hammer Style Girl. Be on the lookout.

8. I Change My Hair On A Regular Basis

Today I may have long hair, tomorrow I am rocking a buzzed cut, but next week I will have purple hair. The possibilities are endless.

9. I Cut My Own Hair

20170825_131615

This is a new skill that I have gained thanks to youtube tutorials and plan on showing all my viewers and readers how to use clippers.

10. I’m A Vegetarian

21COOKING-HUMMUS1-articleLarge

I was not born into this lifestyle, but if circumstances were different I would have started being a vegetarian probably in high-school instead of four years ago first starting to just eat fish, then gradually eating no meat. I liked chicken, but did not love it and ate meat minimally. I don’t miss eating meat and believe that changes happen for a reason.. this being one of them.

11. I Can Cook

PhotoGrid_1503681709438

I can cook (not bake) almost anything, but I can be very lazy. While some can (or possibly not) toast a slice of bread, I am glad that this skill is under my belt.

12. I’m a HUGE Concert Goer

PhotoGrid_1500936725746

It’s evident that I love music. I have seen artists like Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, The Weeknd, J Cole, Drake, Lauryn Hill, Machel Montano, Bruno Mars, Mary J Blige, Maxwell, G Unit, Usher, Sza, Diddy and the Bad Boy crew, and lastly, one of my favourite rappers, Kendrick Lamar when he came to Toronto on my birthday. You can breathe now.

13. I Love To Travel

You want to explore the world? You don’t have to tell me twice.

14. I Model

Modelling is so much fun. I just become another character. This modelling just happened by accident. I never thought that I would do this but here I am!

15. Loves Fashion

20161030_200543

For me fashion is an art form in live motion. You either have the eye or practice makes perfect. Being inspired by people like Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Grace Jones and of course my mother has helped me to create my own style all on my terms.

16. I Write With My Left Hand

keep-calm-im-left-handed

A lot of us left handed people are still the minority so this is still an interesting fact by the majority…plus we think on our right side of the brain.

17. I’m a First Generation Canadian

Screen Shot 2017-08-25 at 1.11.29 PM

My parents were born in Trinidad and immigrated to Canada years ago. I am proud to be born from immigrants which I believe has inspired me to hustle hard. I love my Caribbean roots along with me being a Canadian. I am from Hamilton, Ontario, which is the reason the the name of this blog because the city is Hammer town ( formerly known as the steel city). The face of Canada is a diverse one and how I define myself being a Canadian is dreaming endlessly, making things happen, and staying humble and grateful.

My Time in Spain and Gibraltar

I’m back! After all of the jet lagg along with waking up at random hours of the morning, it is safe to say that I am feeling much better after my week. This would not be right if I did not talk about my  time in Spain along with crossing the border to Gibraltar. There are some many facts to learn about this country, one thing that is obvious is that Spain is a big country! Within the nine days of staying in Spain, my family and I travelled three cities, Granada, the city of Malaga, Benalmedina and Torremolinos, located in the province of Malaga along with heading to Gibraltar which is on the coast of Spain and also a British colony.  This was definitely a trip of a lifetime, so this would be a dishonour if I did not show you my view through pictures!

The Rock of Gibraltar

This is one of the main attractions for this island. Yes there were monkeys and no I did not pet them since we were warned that they bite. The people are super friendly there, the taxi drivers become your helpful friends. The shops close early, usually at 6 but there is plenty to do for the nightlife. Remember that if you are coming from Spain, you are crossing the border to be prepared to show your passports. Fun-fact: Gibraltar is not too far from Morocco!

The architecture was sublime in Granada… truly a work of art! The city reminded me like Toronto in terms of the the fast past, fashion and culture brought at the table. They had dancing and played drums. Talk about a vacation well spent! The photos below are in Alhambra which is one of the most viewed places in Europe. The history is intwined with the Muslim and Catholic  religion, who were constantly at a battle for years. This also goes to show you how some things will never change when it comes to religion and ego. I have yet to visit the popular palace but did not have the energy to wake up at 4 in the morning.

From the historic castle overlooking the popular bullfighting, to one of the oldest theatres in Malaga (Teatro Romano de Malaga), Spain did not have any shortage when peaking my curiosity.  Again you will  find many activities to do in this country.

Photo Shoot #2: Once Upon a Still Life

I know I am late with this post (since these photos were shot back in April), but it’s always better late then never. With this photo shoot I not only collaborated with the talented photographer, Gady Mayen, I also collaborated with a women whose has many titles to her name Deanna Molinaro; an artist, designer, stylist, painter and illustrator to name a few. The theme was Disney, titled Once Upon a Still Life, where Molinaro created her pieces of work on purses and pins inspired by Disney movies. The picture were also featured other models who are some of Molinaro’s friends, plus she will be picture at the second last photo.Feel free to check out more of the lady’s masterful work on her website here.

The Photo Shoots

The month of April was pretty hectic as I was collaborating with a few creative people from Hamilton which helped me to gain some experience with modelling. With this particular event, I took photos for Verni who has a youtube channel called Big Ups Hamilton, and  Chivo, a freelance photographer, who has jewelry line called Hip Hop Bling Show along with the hat gear called Lazy Gear. Another name that I have to mention is my good friend Gady Mayen who is an aspiring photographer and might I add has an extreme knack for the art. A special shout out to the two models, Alison Pipe and Jessica Hubbard that also tagged along with this project… all great vibes. So here they are!

Songs That Have a Prince Inspired Sound

It has been exactly one year since the legendary musician Prince has passed away. Like many other talented singers within his era, Prince created a legacy all in his own right.  I have love for groundbreaking singers like Michael Jackson, and respect for icon Madonna, but Prince created a new and distinctive sound in the 80’s that is duplicated today by many popular artists in the 21st century. Here is my list of songs that were inspired by Prince. I did not feel like they needed to be in order from worst to best because each song is brilliant in a Prince-inspired way!

Promise-  Ciara

By far one of Ciara’s best songs. Miss CiCi sounded like the female version of Prince. From the falsetto singing, hypnotic beat,  and synthesizer singing in the background, the song still sounds amazing today, not feeling dated.

 Adorn- Miguel

Miguel is basically the modern day Prince, so a song like this is right up his ally. From beginning to end, Adorn keeps up with appearances… including how bizarre the video is as well. Of course the vocals are on point.

Kiss It Better- Rihanna

Been waitin’ on that sunshine boy I think it need that back!

Rihanna’s vocals on this song gives me life. There is strength, clarity, soul and passion burning out of Riri’s voice. The lyrics is straight to the point with no strings attached. The electric guitar and simple beat in the background all scream a classic Prince song making it a priceless moment for Bad Gal RiRi.

Rock The Boat- Aaliyah

Aaliyah was of course inspired by Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, but from the lyrics, and innovative beats, the song sounds like something Prince would written and recorded sometime back. Either way (and unfortunately) this is one of the late singer’s signature songs.

Q.U.E.E.N. -Janelle Monae

This song is a little bit more political, adding the feminist tones to it. All the more reasons why the late legendary singer has inspired Janelle Monae. I just feel like adding Erykah Badu’s name to the list since she is feature on the song just because she is cool. He was also featured on her last album, Electric Lady. It may appear on this list…

Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart- Alicia Keys

I read once that when writing and producing the song, Prince was the inspiration for Alicia Keys. Clearly! This was her moment to impress, and I think she succeeded in that.

Climax- Usher

Many compare the song to something that The Weeknd would sing which is well deserved on his behalf, but first and foremost I feel like if Prince was time travelling to the 21st century… this song would have belonged to him. This is one of Usher’s most underrated songs, but clearly hard to sing, creating the “climax.” Pun intended.

Dance For You- Beyonce

Another underrated song that also needs to be on this list. From the horns, to the electric guitar, to Beyonce’s eclectic vocals, she shows the world why she is Queen Bey.

Until The End Of Time- Justin Timberlake ft. Beyonce

If they ever released a video for this… I will keep you all thinking the what ifs. However, every time this song is played it becomes more of a classic. Beyonce does make the song much more interesting for some reason. Listen to it without her and you will see the difference.

Umbrella- Rihanna

You probably did not think twice before hearing this song. I see some inspiration here and Umbrella somehow compliments another song…Purple Rain. I’ll leave it there.

Cranes In The Sky- Solange

Solange is not only weird like Prince, but what they have in come (or a few things) is the soulfulness that they bring to each song. In the 90’s you saw the departure of what Prince usually sang that geared towards a new genre called Neo Soul.

Motivation- Kelly Rowland

Ms. Kelly had her moment to shine here and she did not fail to. The back drop of the beat sounds classic. Her performance at the BET Awards in 2011 was by far the best that year. Rowland was just killing it!

Really Love- D’ Angelo and The Vanguard

This live performance from D’Angelo and The Vanguard gets me speechless. He sounds just like the recorded version. When Prince passed away, I remember him paying tribute to the late singer. The passion and the falsetto voice reminds me a lot of Prince.

Untitled (How Does it Feel)- D’Angelo

I am keeping things PG-13 because you have to be a certain age to watch the actual music video, so there will be no complications in watching the video, but here is the album version of the classic. I do feel like the video overshadows the actual song. When actually listening to the song, the versatile vocals, crazy riffs and rafts from the electric guitar, and tone of the song breathes Prince’s name all over it. D’Angelo is one of my favourite male artists but Prince helped to inspired this sound.

Rocket- Beyonce

I not only see a Prince comparison, but of course D’Angelo’s Untitled song as well. Funny enough you don’t have to log in to view this. The modern day Prince, also known as Miguel co-wrote the song. Need I say more?

One In a Million- Aaliyah

It’s a classic falsetto slow jam, all the more to be inspired the legendary singer himself.

Do What You Want- Lady Gaga Ft. R.Kelly

This song is as Pop/R&B as Lady GaGa will ever get. The duo with R.Kelly may sound odd but they do create the musical magic needed. I needed to post a live performance to showcase the humour and talent shown from both of the genius artists.

Future Sex/Love Sound- Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake may sound more like Michael Jackson than any other artist, accept for The Weeknd. With that being said, not in this song. The production and vocals are leaning more towards Prince’s voice.

High For This – The Weeknd

Speaking of the singer; it is known that Scarborough native The Weeknd is a fan of Prince. So when you here the similarities… you will understand why I chose this song.

Two Weeks- FKA Twigs

Visually, the video reminds me of Aaliyah from Queen of The Damned, by sound there is a mix of Bjork and Prince along with comparing the lyrics. The singer needs to be showcased for her versatile talents. What better way to compare her to the late singer.

Pony- Ginuwine

The video is so bizarre which is one reason why it needs to be on this list. Timbaland’s production seems to have some inspiration by another creative genius but I won’t say who. Lastly, of course the movie Magic Mike brought more hype to the song, retaining the classic 90’s jam back into the limelight.

Redbone- Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino surprised me here. I knew he could sing and had some range, but not in a D’Angelo/Prince- falsetto range. This is a sound that’s inspired by the 70’s funk sound in which the earlier sound of Prince was formed. The song is always on repeat…

Give Em What They Love- Janelle Monae Ft. Prince

This had to be the last song on the list… it features the late singer. What I love the most, aside from Prince singing and playing his electric guitar, was the fact that Janelle Monae kept up with his energy. If you have not heard this song before and you are a fan of the singer, I advise you to replay it. It is by far one of my favourite collaborations in music. I can just imagine what Janelle must be thinking when she recorded the song with the legend and of course after when he passed away.

I , The Classy Afro Punk

Finding your sense of style is a way of finding who you are as a person. I’ve always known that I was (and dressed) in the afro punk fashion. I call it the Classy Afro Chic Punk which I feel fits me to the core. From my blue lipstick, to the purple hair, the afro puffs, buzzed buts, eclectic cornrows and of course my funky way of dressing, it is pretty evident that I am the Classy Afro Punk. So what is Afro Punk? The definition of this for me, means someone who (may or may not be) of African descent, loving to wear afrocentric fashions along with having a diverse love for any music and fashion. In other words, just someone who is free of societal restrictions (including beauty standards and way of living) while being a little bit rebellious. Some may call me a ‘hipster,’ but I don’t concur with that statement. Allow me to reintroduce myself. Here are some pictures to prove the theory.

For The Love of Turbans

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Styling outfits with turbans are the go to when accessorizing a finished look. As an afro punk, this is another form of expressing creativity in fashion.

For The Love of Purple

Rocking these purple boxed braids are definitely one of my favourite looks.  Last year when I wore them, I will never forget when one of my mom’s friends saw the extensions in my shopping bag, and asked if I was crazy for putting them in my hair. Yes I was brave enough to wear them, plus it was a hit with anyone and everyone.

For The Love of Eccentric Cornrows and Armlets

hammerPhotoGrid_1471537371290

This style was super easy to wear, and super fun to rock during the summer of last year. I can’t wait to bring back the arm bracelets, it just adds the funk to any outfit.

For The Love of Afros, Puffs and Anything Fluffy/Funky

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

My hair grows so fast, so last year I was all about the afro puffs and funky styles. The way of dressing afro punk is dressing free of constraints along with having fun with fashion.

For The Love of Buzzed Cuts and Chokers

IMG_20170402_103327_967IMG_20170325_125247_674IMG_20170316_112942_137

Buzzed-cuts are not for the non-brave and barely confident people. There is no hiding behind any hair plus, the makeup and accessories will more dramatic with no hair. Chokers and buzzed-cuts are a standout for any afro punk fashionista.

Blue… Bleu

IMG_20170108_141230_089

The colour blue on a lipstick is an unconventional look. I love this lipstick despite what some (hence more conservative) people may think. Expressing your creativity through fashions means thinking outside of the box… in an afro punk way.

The Role of A Woman

As a woman, I no longer have the time to :

Fake a smile,

Have the capacity to try to be likeable,

Build fake friendships,

Always being polite,

PhotoGrid_1487808041045

Not saying what’s on my mind,

Settling for less,

PhotoGrid_1487809050577

Staying quiet,

Being too loud,

Dumbing myself down a notch,

PhotoGrid_1488748333497

If I am too old or too young,

If I will look good in blue because let’s face it black women get scrutinized by the colour of makeup that we wear,

received_10155065176937528

Staying on social media a little too much,

received_10155065182507528

Worrying too much about my weight, skin, and height,

The pressure from others about having kids at a young age,

Along with what people think if I don’t want  kids,

Having marriage be the frontrunner topic in my life as opposed to my career aspirations,

Letting others walk all over me,

Not saying no,

Allowing others to call me a bitch when I know I am right (sorry not sorry),

PhotoGrid_1489095791010

Asking people permission on how to do my hair,

Being too sensitive,

Not being sensitive enough,

Apologizing for being too aggressive because it is only acceptable when a man acts this way (boys will be boys),

Other women feeling threatened by me do to my looks, brains, power and at times race (some of us hate on one another; it is a general and yet a true statement),

Not uplifting one another,

Enough of the crying and more laughter.

*As women we have a lot of hats to fill along with the pressure from society about what a ‘real’ women is supposed to look like, feel and also the way we talk. But, I choose to live the life in my own terms and speak not only for myself, but for others that need to be heard. In North America… we have the privilege, some more than others, to have our voices heard even on platforms like this. The power can be real.

How To Rock Short Hair

For me hair is just another form of expression for creativity. I wear it long, short, purple, red and anything in between. However, women dawning the shorter hairstyles seem to get more flack because the societal norm for women wearing their hair is usually long and bouncy (excuse me while I go and laugh at these unrealistic expectations). If you are like many girls and women thinking of just cutting off all of your hair, the more power to you. In fact I have a few suggestions myself as I have rocked all sorts of short hair from the bob, buzzed cuts to the Grace Jones inspired high top fade. Here are a few ways to rock your short hair.

Accessorize Until it Hurts

One of benefits to rocking the extreme short hairstyles are that the accessories are endless. The ear cuffs are my favourite due to the edgy and effortless look that it adds to cropped hairstyles. There’s an image that combines badass while glamorous… you can’t go wrong with the look. The big hoop earrings will also look chic while balancing out your face (more particularly elongating your neck) You can also wear a statement choker along with some simple stud earrings.

Hats Make The Outfit

photogrid_1412891991125

This is one of those looks that I missed when my hair grew out, it got so thick I could not wear hats like this one above. I’m not complaining about my hair, but with short hair its clearly more durable to rock the hats with no hair as opposed to having to struggle with hair.

Blonde Today, Red Tomorrow

20170225_162950

There are endless more opportunities to colour your hair when short. Why? Because you can cut it all off if you don’t love the colour or if damaged. I truly do believe that you can have a lot more fun with colouring your hair then with longer hairstyles. With long hair there is a greater chance to having the bleach damage your hair than opposed to it being buzzed. I pay more attention to the roots and ends to my hair short then if it were longer. The freedom and creativity are endless.

Glam it Up

20170225_170125

Overall short hair can be low maintenance. You get up, condition the hair and go. I save at least 20 minutes doing my hair if longer (even though I have no patience at all  with any time over 10 minutes of doing a hairstyle). Going out is the best since all of my friends either blow dry, straighten their hair or do whatever else they need to do to get ready for any night event, and here I am just brushing whatever hair I have and ready. There is a glamour to short hair more so with buzzed hairstyles because of the air of confidence that it brings. Your face is the centre stage and there is no hiding.

So what are you waiting for? I say just do it. The more you think about chopping all of your hair is all the more reasons why you should take thoughts into actions. Hair does grow out if you don’t like it

How Female Rappers of The 90’s Influenced Fashion

Gone are the days where women dominated hip-hop. These powerful ladies cleverly combated their male counterparts by not only proving that they can rhyme but also can tell a story that resonated with others internationally. All through the 90’s (where many were actually praised for their talents in music), there were so many diverse female rappers like Lil’ Kim, Queen Latifah, Foxy Brown, Eve, Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill, Da Brat, Salt n Pepa and Left Eye from TLC to name a few. Nicki Minaj is the only heavyweight female rapper literally being the only representation. She is talented but this is pretty sad.

Let us go back in time when the 90’s were a golden era for hip-hop and this did include the female counterparts. Here are my reasons as to why female rappers of the decade influenced today’s fashion in a huge way.

They Were Real (Eve)

eve

One of the reasons why Eve was so popular in the late 90’s was not only because of how good of a rapper she was, but because she spoke a story that many could relate to. They were real, personal and relatable. Her rebellious buzz cute helped gave Eve the edge needed.

Knew What They Wanted (Salt N Pepa)

salt_n_pepa_copy_740_486_s_c1

Salt n’ Pepa had the swagger and confidence that gave them the bravado to just go out and state what they wanted. This legendary hip-hop group broke barriers in a decade where female group rappers needed a voice, and still do.

Quirky (Lil Kim)

lilkim

Before there was Nicki Minaj and even Rihanna, Lil’ Kim was the innovator of quirkiness in fashion and music. Rappers are not the only ones inspired by this force to reckoned with. In an interview after Rihanna had performed her song, Bitch Better Have My Money, the singer explained how influential Lil’ Kim was on inspiring Rihanna’s style, music and topics within the lyrics. I’m not surprised one bit… remember the red hair?

A Sense of Confidence/Regality (Queen Latifah)

queenlatifah_d

When I hear a song from Queen Latifah as a rapper, it was all about the confidence from a woman’s standpoint. She rightfully demanded the respect that she needed as a rapper (first), singer and actress. The transition of hip-hop was so exciting because it was such a new genre, and MC’s would be the voice of the young black generation. We need more female artists like her.

Spoke From The Heart (Lauryn Hill)

lauryn-hill-1998-billboard-650

Then there was Lauryn, aka L boogie or Lauryn Hill, who made history for a genre that many had dismissed in the past. Miss L boogie had the ability to rap and sing making it to the World Guinness records for her talents in music. With The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, there were so many firsts in the hip-hop and as a female rapper including the first number one album by a female rapper, the first number one song and the coveted Grammy award for Album of the Year. She was just expressing herself through a record that was so compelling and true still to this day. Hill’s dreadlocks killed the style game.

Weird But a Genius (Missy Elliott)

missy-elliot-supa-dupa-fly

Missy Elliott is a genius point blank period. This is not just through her rhymes in a rap verse, or when she wrote a lot of other singers songs (including Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child and Beyonce), she is just weird and it works because this is Missy Elliott.

Rough Around The Edges (Foxy Brown)

foxybrown

Foxy Brown, or Ill Nana was Jay Z’s protege in the 90’s. Some may compare her to Lil’Kim but I will argue this, because as there are many similarities between them, the differences overweigh … particularly the style. Lil’ Kim dawned all of the bright and colourful outfits and wigs that matched, but Brown just kept it natural with the colour. She didn’t portray a soft feminine woman, just a tough bitch who didn’t care who was judging her.

Fun (Left Eye)

lefteyepq

Before Nelly was rocking the bandaid on his left eye, Left Eye (Lopes) from TLC rocked it with eye black (North American football players wear this sunscreen) on her left eye. Her style was just as unique as her rapping skills. Unfortunately she passed away to really cement herself as a solo artist. However, with TLC, she shined brightly with her extravagant way of dressing, and outlandish rhymes… her verse from Waterfalls still give me goosebumps.  Rest in peace left eye.

All of these ladies challenged how society viewed them not just as a woman in a man’s world but also as a black women on social standards or beauty along with what a feminist looks like. The beauty of fashion along with music is that they have the ability to be diverse and heal others. There’s a sense of accomplishment when being creative can influence someone who is just trying to get through life day by day.

40 Albums That Have Influenced My Style

Welcome to my world. There’s a quote that states that music is the the connection to someone’s soul and that is the ultimate truth. The impact that music has had on me is indescribable.  From the tonality, the moods along with the subject, music and fashion is a creative combination. For a long time I have wanted to write about how music has influenced my dressing for a long time, but I also knew that there had to be a certain sense of timing with the discussion. All 40 of these albums through the years have had an impact on my way of dressing, confidence along with a sense of style. So look no further due because here they are. Enjoy!

40. The Writing’s On The Wall (Destiny’s Child; Columbia)

destinys_child_-_the_writings_on_the_wall

Oh how I miss this era of R&B music. I played this record almost everyday after school. This is the breakthrough album from the talented Destiny’s Child. From hits like Say My Name, Jumpin Jumpin to Bills Bills Bills, Beyonce and her gang taught young girls and women that it’s okay to speak your mind while keeping your energy graceful. Miss Yonce is killing the cornrow game.

39.Spice (Spice Girls; Virgin)

spice

This is probably one of the first albums that I had listened to This blockbuster album from The Spice Girls created an impact all on it’s own. This was effect of the girl power era and they seemed irreplaceable… until Ginger Spice ruined it all (one of the worst times for music). This also created a franchise which included products like school rulers, erasers, a movie, posters and of course the dolls. I had owned Sporty Spice, Baby Spice and Scary Spice.

38. One In a Million (Aaliyah; Blackground/Atlantic )

oneinamillion

One In A Million is an album that changed the game for R&B and pop music. Aaliyah, who was 17 years old at the time had some powerhouse producers (Timbaland) and writers (Missy Elliott) combined. The trio created the ultimate musical magic. Aaliyah’s crop-tops, tom-boy chicness along with her hair were iconic. Remember the one eye style?

37. Goodies (Ciara; Shonuff/LaFace/Zomba)

goodies_cover

They didn’t call Ciara the Princess of Crunk n B for nothing.  Even though the music is in the past, this genre of music has helped to establish trap music. Some people forget that Miss CiCi was as hood as hood got and I loved every bit of the ghetto chicness. From beginning to end this album had the bursts of energy helping to make Ciara more than just a one hit wonder. From songs like Goodies, One Two Step and Oh, this all brings me memories of when I was waking up, working out, then getting ready for high school. Time goes way too fast. P.S. who else imitated that dance on the car in the song Oh?

36. Rated R (Rihanna; Def Jam)

rihanna_-_rated_r

This list would not be complete if I did not have at least one of Rihanna’s albums. Rated R has to be by far the pop singer’s most emotional record to date. Having been released right after the abuse altercations from ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, this heartfelt and triumphant album inspires woman all over the world… plus you can still be fearless while expressing your creativity. The vocals are another huge improvement by RiRi.  You can definitely hear the anger and frustration in some of the lyrics. Russian Roulette and Cold Case Love are by far her best tracks on the album. Her style back then reminded my of the legendary fashionista Grace Jones with the tapered hair along with her padded shoulders. Absolutely fierce.

35. Good Girl Gone Bad (Rihanna; Def Jam)

good_girl_gone_bad

I can’t believe this album was released almost 10 years ago! It’s the album that made me recognize Rihanna in an innovative light. From her black short bob to her standout fashion style, the year 2007 was a breakout year for Rihanna when coming to trends. Of course I have to mention the hits… umbrella… ella… ella. This is still stuck in my head.

34. ANTI (Rihanna; Westbury Road/Roc Nation)

rihanna_-_anti

This is Rihanna’s most recent work after a four year hiatus. She wanted to create something new and different from her past albums. What I love is the fast that the songstress did not have a lot of dance songs which is what Rihanna is known for. Her electric style has matched the more alternative R&B that was projected on this album. In her hit video, Work, she combined the Caribbean culture along with her fashion, plus less I forget short-term  boyfriend Drake.

33. Jagged Little Pill (Alanis Morrisette; Maverick/Reprise) /(My Life (Mary J Blige; Uptown)

alanis_morissette_-_jagged_little_pill-copymary_j_blige_album_cover_my_life

It’s the angry white lady meets the angry black woman. I mean this in the finest sense. I truly believe that passion feeds the creativity best. When you are feeling mad, happy, depressed or whatever the emotion, it just feels more organic through art. These two albums are masterpieces. Alanis Morrissette’s Jagged Little Pill sets the tone of what is real and what needs to be discussed in this rock album.  Mary J Blige’s My Life heals due to just relating to her message. The hip hop diva influenced many women, men and teens alike due to the fact that this record was an expression of pain, you hear this through her voice. You hear it through both of the records.

32. Ashanti (sophomore album by Ashanti; Murder Inc./Def Jam)

ashanti_-_ashanti

Ashanti was a start of a new era. She had some notoriety because of fact that she was on Murder Inc. and wrote a hit song for Jennifer Lopez, but it was time for the singer songwriter to shine. The year was 2002 and Ashanti reigned with two number one songs and few top tens. This was the era where I was inspired by hip hop fashion and music. It was also an era of hideous matching pink track suits and those ugly headbands. I unfortunately rocked the matching track suits, but I hope that they don’t make a comeback… at all.

31. FutureSex/Lovesounds (Justin Timberlake; Jive/Zomba)

justin_timberlake_-_futuresex_lovesounds

Justin Timberlake’s second album,Future Sex/Lovesounds, influenced by Prince. Timberlake also collaborated with the genius producer Timbaland. The combination of Timberlake and Timberland was pure magic with the changing tones on almost all songs on the record. It also enforces that the duo brought sexy back, but most importantly great music and dapper fashion.

30. Confessions (Usher; Arista)

usher_-_confessions_album_cover

For Usher in 2004, it was all about the gold chains, snapback hats with the ATL (the city Atlanta which is where he is from) initial on them, fedora hats and of course confessions for the singer. The hits kept on coming, and many compared Mr. Raymond to the legend Michael Jackson due to the style of dancing. People took notice around the world. I still want that chain just to spin like he did on his hit song Yeah.

29. Cut 4 ME (Kelela; Fade To Mind)

kelela-cut-4-me1

I know this record is a mix-tape, but this is my countdown and it is one of the best records that I have listened to. Even though Kelela on Cut 4 Me reminds me of a mixture of Janet Jackson and Erykah Badu, there is something futuristic about her. She may not be a household name like The Weeknd, but what they have in common is changing the game of music with alternative/electric R&B. She was on Solange’s recent album on the song, Scales which is nothing that I have heard from the singer. Kelela is a force to be reckoned with… I look forward to hear what she releases in the future plus I see a bright career ahead of her. I’m loving her dreadlocks with her shaved sides… very cool.

28. Good Kid…Maad City (Kendrick Lamar, Top Dawg, Aftermath, Interscope)

goodkidmaadcity

The introduction to the album sets the tone of escapism. Kendrick Lamar’s debut album is pure gold with songs like Poetic Justice, Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe, Swimming Pools and many more solid hip hop and r&b tracks which tell a story on Good Kid Maad City. This was a start of something promising and also what I call borderline genius.

27. To Pimp A Butterfly (Kendrick Lamar,Top Dawg, Aftermath, Interscope)

topimpabutterfly

This album is poetic justice. It’s a source of empowerment, black culture, depression along with love and hope. With what is going on in the 21st century, it is pretty refreshing how artists like Lamar are bringing back what so many rappers in the early 90’s did when reporting (or rapping) about racial profiling in America. Topics that pertain to this is needed within society. Pure gold in my opinion.

26. Mama’s Gun (Erykah Badu, Motown,Puppy Love)

erykah_badu_-_mamas_gun

I need to have an article just on Erykah Badu because she is simply one of the coolest, kookiest, quirky artists out there and way too underrated. For me she is the queen of Neo Soul. Mama’s Gun is the essence of just a great album and one to inspire many women and men to just let go and pack light. Don’t be a bag lady!

25. The Breakthrough (Mary J Blige, Geffen)

mary_j_blige_-_the_breakthrough

Yes I had to have another Mary J Blige album on the list. The Breakthrough is a comeback album for the singer and does not disappoint from beginning to end. It’s a classic Mary J Blige record that uplifts and also relates to the listener. Back when walkmens were still a thing, the album helped to uplift my spirits during high-school whenever I was either stressed out and just needed some music therapy. Miss Blige’s music is just good for the soul and brings out my inner diva. Faux fur anyone?

24.Ceremonials (Florence and The Machine, Island)

ceremonials

I listened to this album by accident, youtube has a funny way of selling products to people without you purchasing anything (thanks to auto play).  There is absolutely no regrets because of how great the album is. Florence and The Machine sings different genres from rock to gospel without sounding offbeat. Ceremonials has a dreamy and romantic tone even when the topics are borderline dark. This also inspires a whimsical view on my style. After my grandmother passed away, this album brought another perspective all together, and helped through that tough time. Only If For a Night startled me due to how similar the topic was on the death of Florence Welsh’s grandmother, like as though she were speaking to me. The power of music and art heals.

23. Number 1’s (Mariah Carey, Columbia)

mariah_number_1s

Somewhere in this countdown, I needed to have Mariah Carey somewhere. I was raised by her music in the 90’s so her compilation of all (almost) of her number one songs is suitable for this countdown. It showcases those powerful vocals along with her writing skills. Just pure gold… or platinum because she has the voice to prove it.

22. FanMail/Crazy Sexy Cool (TLC, Laface, Arista)

fanmailtlc_-_crazysexycool_album_cover

What I love about TLC is the realness that they bring on each of their records. While Crazy, Sexy, Cool brings brashness, Fanmail is a record that is truly ahead of its time, still sounding new. The girls were never perfect but their music had stories that still resonate with people today on topics from sex, love, feminism, STDs and the societal standards of beauty. They knew what they wanted and brought the confidence in which you could not escape. We need more artists like them but of course you can’t duplicate an original like Chilli, T-Boz and Left Eye.

21.Ray of Light (Madonna, Maverick, Warner Bros.)

ray_of_light_madonna

Many critics have stated that this is one of Madonna’s best albums and I agree. I can hear her voice, and what I mean my that is I can hear the expression clearly on each of her songs. When she is excited, sad or happy it shows in her voice. It’s an honest and adventurous  record that does not sound like a 1998 record which, is when Ray of Light was released. The influence on today’s electronic music is evident.

20. Voodoo (D’Angelo, Cheeba Sound, Virgin)

voodoo

At the time of the release, I was had no interest in listening to this album, I was 10 and it was too mature for me to grasp the topics. As I got older… I discovered how talented D’Angelo was when listening to Voodoo and could not wait on his long awaited album that released in 2014. His voice is a blend of artists like Marvin Gaye and Prince but his writing is all on him. A true talent.

19. Whitney Houston (sophomore album by Whitney Houston, Arista)

whitney_houston_-_whitney_houston_album

I do believe that Whitney Houston had the best voice in the industry. At the time of the release on her debut album, she probably had no idea the influence, set of standards, raising bars and breaking down the racial barriers by the voice herself. What’s impressive is that she was only 22 while having a voice… like that. When I think of Whitney Houston and her influence on many singers like Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Beyonce, Pink, Brandy, Monica, Toni Braxton, Kelly Rowland, Mary J Blige, Ashanti, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Ciara, Usher, Robin Thicke (to name a few), I think of goosebumps because her voice was everything to the music culture. This is some of the best vocals that I have heard on any album.

18. Baduizm (Erykah Badu, Kedar, Universal)

baduizmerykah

From the head wraps, scented candles and the signature rings, Baduizm set the tone for a new era of music to arrive… named Neo Soul. This is Erykah Badu signature album. It’s more than just R&B, there are elements of jazz, hip hop and soul combined like pancakes and maple syrup. I can’t hate on head wraps because it brings the funk to an outfit.

17. House of Balloons (The Weeknd, XO)      Nostalgia, Ultra (Frank Ocean, self released)

house_of_balloons_by_the_weekndFrank_Ocean-Nostalgia_Ultra.jpeg

Speaking of a new era, here are two masterpieces which were both released on the internet. This is how many people download music. I was just starting my Journalism program in college when I had stumbled upon two amazing mixtapes that changed R&B music. Frank Ocean’s voice was refreshing to hear. The whole mixtape brought promise to listeners for the direction of where music was heading. Nostalgia, Ultra will always be a gem because of how effortless the sound is. No one had any idea of who The Weeknd was, he was a complete mystery, but his music was dark, gothic yet soulful, all the reason to follow the reclusive artist. Listening to The Morning is a favourite of mine and is the reason why I was hooked on his music. House of Balloons is by far his best mixtape out of the three that he released.  These two artists just keep continuing to release great music.

16. Miss E So Addictive (Missy Elliott, The Goldmind, Elektra)

missy_elliott-miss_e-_so_addictive

Missy Elliott is weird, cool and talented. She brings her genius ideas to the table. Missy didn’t just rap but she also sings. Vocally her voice flourishes throughout the album. I can hear the impact that Lil Kim, Prince, Rick James and Lauryn Hill has on Miss E So Addictive.  She is truly one in a million. I am probably one in the million of millennials whom had praised Katy Perry for brining Missy Elliott out in the Super Bowl performance in 2015.

15. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy/The College Dropout (Kanye West, Roc-A-Fella, Def Jam)

mbdtf_altthecollegedropout

Two different albums from the same artist. The irony that Kanye West brings are the opposing subjects. Where The College Dropout brings hope and the reality of life, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy delivers darkness and escapism to life.  It shows you the stages of West’s life in a span of about six years. Where his breakout album is borderline comedic, twisted fantasy is sarcastic and depressing. The differences are due to the impact that his mother left on Kanye, before and after she passed away. This also shows that greatness of West’s genius talent. Pure art.

14. Black Messiah (D’Angelo, RCA)

black-messiah

The wait was over when D’angelo released his masterpiece in 2014. Black Messiah is ultimately the dictionary for greatness. It sets the standard of excellent albums for the our times.  This is another album that speaks about the racial barriers in America along with what it means to being black. You may need  to take a second or third listen just to hear what greatness is bestowed upon us. I am still waiting for him to perform these records in Canada. I raise my hands to an album well done! What a classic.

13. Hardcore (Lil Kim, Undeas, Big Beat, Atlantic)

lil_kim_-_hard_core

Hardcore explains what the album is all about… pure raunchiness, aggression, and just a lot of fun! Miss Kim is just one of the guys with her sexually charged lines, and witty rhymes. I will be completely honest and state that when first listening to Lil Kim’s debut album, it sounded like a musical porn at best. She knows exactly what she wants with no apologies while sounding like her male counterparts in hip hop.  Lil Kim changed the hip hop game for female and male rappers alike with dirty rap with Hardcore. Her colourful wigs will never go out of date because hipsters around the world (whether some will like to admit and Nicki Minaj) dawn on Kim’s signature style. Even Rihanna is a fan of her style.

12. Songs in A Minor (Alicia Keys, J )

songsofaminor

Alicia Keys was only 20 when this album was released. She wrote and produced every song on the album which is insane in this day of age. With her cool cornrow hairstyles, cool fedora hats, the relatable songwriting and of course the effortless piano playing, Songs in A Minor is the essence of how simplicity is best. The outlook on love, life and respect is unique and relatable. I am a fan of the singer, so this choice was the hardest but her debut is a stand out.

11. Purple Rain (Prince, Warner Bros.)

princepurplerain

Prince created a sound for music. Like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, as a black artist, his music was played for all to listen to and not just one set of people. When you listen to Purple Rain, you hear a little bit of rock, some r&b, a splash of funk, a hint of electronic music and a force of neo soul which was not even a genre in 1984. He wrote and produced all of the songs on the soundtrack and I am pretty sure some of the instruments were played by him also. I can only tell the impact that such a singer has had on many artists with the slow, electric, r&b tinged songs, but this will be for another time I promise. His voice fluctuates beautifully from a falsetto to a deep voice. Prince’s legacy will never die, his style in fashion and music will live on forever. Just take a listen to the magic of Purple Rain.

10. Ready To Die (Biggie Smalls, Bad Boy)

ready2die

Let’s just say that I prefer Biggie over Tupac… this is just my preference.  With Ready to Die, the late rapper brings topics like sex, depression, gang rivalry and confidence to light. It’s not just a hip hop classic album, this is a classic album period. There is a bit of an ironic twist with Biggie’s debut album because one minute he is talking about being the greatest, to just giving up on life with Suicidal Thoughts and Everyday Struggle. This is his biography in an album so to say. Hip hop will never be the same… I will never be the same. Now that is what I call a masterpiece.

9. Back To Black (Amy Winehouse, Island)

backtoblack

Another talented artist gone way too soon and also another album that is pretty much Amy Winehouse’ autobiography. We all know that her personal life had a lot of turmoil and this comes to light in Back to Black. I hear her pain, frustration and sense of loneliness through her words and voice. Winehouse wrote all of the songs like a story. Her style was all her own with the beehive hair to the Monroe piercing. When she sang she sung a word like many today try to copy. Adele, Duffy and many of white British r&b soul singers live in the house that was created by the late singer.

8. LP1 (FKA Twigs, Young Turks)

fka_twigs_-_lp1

The album is weird, ethereal, angelic, gloomy and artistic. Nothing like I have listened to and another reason why LP1 needs to be on the top 10 list.  FKA Twigs brings an innovative and unique twist to the music game that stands out from all the newbies coming out with music. I think she just sleeps and dreams up her next ideas. They just see to come naturally. Her best songs on her debut album are Two Weeks, Pendulum, Lights On and Video Girl. Each songs have diverse yet united sounds from some tones of R&B and EDM music. Her activism and feminist views shows through the music videos. As I wrote in an article about the artist, her style is pretty different too, but of course cool like FKA Twigs herself. This is only her debut album, I am excited and patiently waiting on her second effort.

7. Thriller (Michael Jackson, Epic)

thriller

Let’s get one thing clear. Thriller is the best selling album of all times. It was released over 30 years ago and impact is still real! From beginning to end Michael Jackson, and Quincy Jones takes you on a roller coaster while making music that touch many people of different cultures around the world. It would a travesty not to talk about the videos because he changed the way creativity is expressed within the pop culture of music; the song Thriller didn’t even go number one but is played yearly every Halloween. It’s now a standard to create a story through videos then just selling your music (unless you are Beyonce but she herself still makes videos). He will always be the King of Pop.

6. Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 (Janet Jackson, A&M)

rhythmnation1814

Miss Jackson is an icon all on her own. Rhythm Nation 1814 is another gem discussing what it meant to be black in America. This sounds redundant but the topic will never get old if people do not change their racist views on others. As a Canadian, I always find it interesting how artists talk about American politics because being black and a woman in Canada is somewhat different in the U.S. Like her big brother Michael, Janet’s music videos set the tone and impact on artists like Beyonce, Britney Spears, Ciara and many others because she is a creator of excellence.  I need that whole soldier outfit and key ear ring she wore in Rhythm Nation.

5. Control (Janet Jackson, A&M)

control

This is one of those first albums to have a positive light on what being a black feminist was all about. Miss Jackson was able to break free from her family, creating her own style in fashion and music. Control has changed the face of R&B and Hip Hop with a new genre called New Jack Swing.

4. The Low End Theory (A Tribe Called Quest, Jive, RCA Records)

thelowendtheory

This was the golden age of hip hop. With elements like jazz integrated with hip hop, the genre had a huge influence from The Low End Theory. I suggest that if you are love hip hop and jazz, or is just a lover of music… please take a listen to a masterpiece that still resonates with people including myself today. While Q-Tip brings the confidence and swagger, Phife Dawg brought humour and truth into the rap game. This group is a true entrepreneur to such a new genre that changes at a daily paste (look at today’s music.) Their second album deals with racism (it was the early 90’s), being young along with people just trying to fit in. Again it’s my suggestion to listen to a classic.

3. A Seat at The Table (Solange, Saint, Columbia)

aseatatthetable

If you have read some of my blog posts in the past, then you will understand that this album had to be on this list. I wrote 1000 words on why you need to have a seat at Solange’s table and gave eight reasons within the article. I feel like a proud mother when I listen to such great work from a singer who is often in the shadows of her big sister. Solange strikes gold with A Seat at The Table. As you already know what makes a great album are a few things that include topics that deal with today, what it means to be black in this world and also the uniqueness surrounding the album. From Weary all the way to the end, Solange discusses the struggles of being a young black women all while trying to make her son proud. I gave props to her parents because they did something right with the Knowles’ sisters. The standout tracks are the haunting and soulful Weary, the emotional Cranes in The Sky, the graceful vocals from Mad, the confident Don’t Touch My Hair, the dreamy Borderline, the fun Junie, the tones from Don’t Wish Me Well, the innovative beats from Scales, and the best song on the album… F.U.B.U. . I could write more but you get the picture. Her interesting sense of style doesn’t hurt either. Please go on tour this year!

2. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (Lauryn Hill, Ruffhouse, Columbia)

laurynhillthemiseducationoflaurynhillalbumcover

This is an album that transcended my thoughts, way of dressing and views on life. Before A Seat At The Table that speaks about todays struggles on race, love, depression and rebirth, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill set that tone almost 20 years ago. I was only eight when her album was released and did listen to it at the time. Lauryn Hill is a genius with combining singing and rapping all at once. When you take a listen to songs like Everything is Everything and Doo Wop (That Thing), they showcase that talent that I believe never dies, new work just needs to be released. The album questions and shifts your thoughts black feminism, depression, hunger for ambition and heartbreak. We need more artists that tell a story because the topics may be all the same, but writers write stories and create sceneries that are all their own. What I love most about this album is the fact that her rapping is above her vocals and man can Lauryn Hill sing!

1.Off The Wall (Michael Jackson, Epic ,CBS)

offthewall

Off The Wall is just pure energy from beginning to finish. I read somewhere that when recording the album, Michael was at a dark time in his life, I find it quite interesting because of how lighthearted and upbeat the record is. There is no album that is as upbeat and uplifting like this effort. All the songs are amazing and with the collaborations like producer Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Rob Temperton, you are in good company. The first song, Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough reels you in, just pure fun and excitement and of course the best song on the album. Rock with You is full of romance and fun while Working Day and Night sustains energy and the funk from the 70’s.  Get on the Floor continues to invite people to get on the floor and dance while Off The Wall explains to enjoy life and not take it too seriously… live of the wall. Girlfriend is a funny track about Michael telling his lover to leave her boyfriend because she is cheating on him… what a story. She’s out of My Life deals with heartbreak and showcases some of Michael Jackson’s best vocals. Stevie Wonder wrote the jazz induced I Can’t Help It, another standout song for me. It’s the Falling In love belongs in a great musical while Burn The Disco Out reminds you to re-listen to such a great album. My reasoning over why I chose Off The Wall of Thriller is because of the hunger and energy that hear on the album. You can hear just how talented and borderline genius this artist is or was. His legacy lives on.
